Christ the King Public School celebrated the spirit and splendour of the Onam festival with a vibrant Pookalam Competition held on 27 August 2026, Thursday. The competition provided students with an opportunity to showcase their creativity, teamwork and appreciation of the country’s rich cultural traditions.

The school functioned as usual during the initial periods, while the last two periods were reserved for the Pookalam Competition. For the Primary Sections, the competition was conducted within the classrooms. The tables and chairs were neatly moved to one side to create sufficient space for the activity. With the guidance and assistance of their teachers, students were divided into small groups and worked together to create beautiful floral designs inspired by the traditional Pookalam associated with Onam.

For students from Grades 6 to 10, the competition was organized at various designated locations within the school, including the Music Room, the lobby near the Music Room, the area near the AV Room, and the lobbies near the laboratories. Students from Grades 8, 9 and 10 also utilized the auditorium for their creations. Teachers mentored and guided the students throughout the activity, while some teachers actively assisted the groups in bringing their creative ideas to life.

The school premises soon came alive with an array of colourful floral patterns, intricate designs and artistic arrangements. Students experimented with different patterns and combinations, creating Pookalams that reflected both traditional elements and their own imagination. Some groups prepared multiple floral designs, while others enhanced their creations with decorative lamps, adding warmth and beauty to the festive atmosphere.

The Pookalams remained on display for an entire day, allowing students and staff to admire the colourful creations. The entire school presented a delightful and festive appearance, making the event a true feast for the eyes.

The judges were Ms Swarna, Ms Nethra and Ms Kalpana, who assessed the creations based on their overall presentation, creativity, design and teamwork. The winners were announced during the Special Assembly held the following week.

The results were:

 First Place – Grade 1 C

First Runner-up – Grade 2 C

 Second Runner-up – Grade 10

The Manager and Correspondent, Rev. Dr. Paul, the Principal, Ms Teresa Simon, the Vice Principal,  Ms Lopamudra, congratulated the winning teams and appreciated the efforts of all the participating students and  highlighted that the true spirit of such celebrations lies not merely in winning a competition but in coming together, sharing ideas, cooperating and working as a team.

The Pookalam Competition successfully brought together students across different grades in a spirit of joy, creativity and collaboration. It gave them an opportunity to experience the cultural significance of the festival, while developing important values such as teamwork, cooperation, creativity and mutual appreciation.

The colourful Pookalams, artistic floral arrangements and glowing lamps transformed the school into a festive spectacle. The celebration was indeed a wonderful feast for the eyes and a memorable expression of the spirit of  teamwork and never say die attitude, at Christ the King Public School.
