July 1st is celebrated every year as National Doctors’ Day in order to recognize and honour the contributions of doctors and healthcare professionals. The day aims to bring to light the dedication, hard work, and sacrifices made by doctors in providing healthcare and improving general well-being.
At Christ the King Public School, we had a resourceful session by Dr Divya. The staff and students from grades 5 to 10 had gathered in the auditorium. The principal, Ms Sajana Priya gave a warm welcome and introduced the doctor, her profile as a consultant at Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore and her vast experience and expertise.
The doctor started the session, by asking simple questions, relating to the importance of breakfast, its impact on health. She then showed a video on the importance of eating good food, how food from outside or junk food can affect us adversely.
She also emphasized upon the need for sports, outdoor activities and physical fitness, demonstrating the activity pyramid and it applications. The Doctor highlighted the benefits of eating together, that creates a family bonding and conducive to general wellbeing.
The doctor further talked about goal settings for discipline and any initiative that we take towards health and hygiene, have to be started with short term goals. She explained the adverse effects of mobile phones, and how technology can be a bane as much as a boon. One of the ways to come out of this mobile phone addiction is to get involved in more household chores, help parents and elders at home, involve in more outdoor games and physical activities.
She also elaborated upon the concept of personal hygiene, where ‘cleanliness is considered next to Godliness’, importance of hand washing before and after meals, preventing the spread of germs and hence diseases, which was stressed upon during the Covid-19 period.
The doctor also stressed upon the need for dressing up well, to help build up one’s confidence and approach. She also talked about primary care and importance of first aid.
Lastly, we had the ‘Question and Answer’ session, where students were encouraged to ask questions, provide their inputs, and seek clarification and made it very interactive.
Ms Reema delivered the Vote of Thanks, highlighting the role of doctors in the community and thanked Dr Divya. She thanked the manager and principal, for organizing the session for the benefit of the staff and students.
The principal felicitated the doctor with a shawl and a bouquet.
Thus, the session highlighted the importance of maintaining good health, covering topics like balanced diet, physical activity, self-discipline, hygiene and mental well-being.
