CKPS Launches ‘Sugar Board’ Initiative to Promote Healthier Choices Among Students

Jul 6, 2025 | Events

As per the directive of the NCFPCR (National Commission for protection of child rights ) ICSE  has mandated the establishment of “sugar boards” in all affiliated schools to educate students about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption and its link to rising health issues like Type 2 diabetes.

Christ the King  Public School (KA390), has taken up this initiative to protect children’s health and ensure a safer, healthier environment for their growth.

Ms Radha Dayanand and Mr Adarsh conducted a session on the 25th of July, 2025, to educate the students from grades   6 to 8, on the health risks associated with high sugar consumption, especially obesity and metabolic disorders. They provided detailed information on the recommended daily sugar intake, Do’s and Don’t’s, sugar content in common foods and drinks, related health risks, and healthier alternatives, thereby promoting informed food choices among students.

It was  a 2 hour session which was highly informative and resourceful. After a brief talk and explanation, they showcased the PPT , highlighting the key features and best practices. They also had a Question and Answer session, where the students were encouraged to come up on the stage, to provide their inputs, ask questions and clarify their doubts.

Post the session, there was also a groupwise poster making competition, based on the same theme to create awareness among young minds on sugar consumption and it’s impact on their health. This was also a creative and engaging way to assess their knowledge and session outcomes. The teachers, Ms Radha Dayanand, Ms Padmavati Naik, Mr Adarsh, Mr Vinayak Hegde, Ms Rose Maggi, Ms Reema, Ms Bhavana, Ms Nanda and Ms Simmi guided the children and assisted them in this poster making activity.

Key Features of Sugar Boards established at the school are:

  • Visual Display:

The boards will use graphics, infographics, and real-world comparisons (like teaspoons of sugar) to illustrate the sugar content of popular snacks and beverages. After all, ‘A picture speaks a thousand words’

  • Educational Content:

The boards will clearly outline the recommended daily sugar intake, the sugar content of various foods and drinks (especially junk food and sugary beverages), and the associated health risks like obesity and diabetes.

  • Healthier Alternatives:

The boards will also showcase healthier food options, alternatives and lifestyle choices, encouraging students to make better and informed decisions.

  • Rising Health Concerns:

The initiative addresses the growing problem of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes, linked to high sugar intake.

  • Increased Awareness:

Sugar boards will raise awareness among students, parents, and school staff about the importance of reducing sugar consumption.

  • Promoting Healthy Habits:

By providing clear information and promoting healthier alternatives, the boards aim to foster long-term healthy eating habits among students.

Expected Outcomes in the long run:

  • Increased Nutrition Literacy:

Students will gain a better understanding of the sugar content in their food and make healthier choices.

  • Reduced Sugar Consumption:

The awareness generated by the sugar boards is expected to lead to a reduction in sugar intake among students.

  • Improved Health Outcomes:

By promoting healthier eating habits, the initiative aims to reduce the risk of childhood obesity, diabetes, and other related health issues.

We believe that these boards will be of immense help in the long run. These are not just boards, but timely reminders and warning signs to promote healthier food choices among children and reduce the incidence of diet-related diseases.

After all, we know that “ Prevention is better than cure. Health is Wealth ”
